FCL vs LCL: What’s the Difference?

Full container or shared container? How to choose for your sea shipment.

Quick answer

FCL means you book a whole container; LCL means you share a container and pay only for the space you use. FCL suits large volumes, LCL suits smaller shipments.

FCL – Full Container Load

You book an entire 20ft or 40ft container. Best for large volumes, and your cargo is not mixed with anyone else’s.

LCL – Less than Container Load

Your cargo shares a container with other shippers and you pay for the volume you use. Best for smaller shipments.

Rule of thumb

If your cargo fills most of a 20ft container, FCL is often better value. For smaller volumes, LCL is usually more economical.
