What Is Volumetric Weight?

Why a large, light box can cost more than you expect, and how to calculate it.

Quick answer

Volumetric weight = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 5000 for most express couriers. You are charged on the higher of volumetric and actual weight.

Volumetric vs actual weight

Couriers charge on the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric (dimensional) weight: the space a box takes up on an aircraft.

How to calculate it

For most express couriers: Length × Width × Height (in cm) ÷ 5000 = volumetric weight in kg. Example: a 50 × 40 × 40 cm box = 16 kg volumetric weight, even if it weighs 8 kg.

How to reduce it

Use the smallest box that protects your items and avoid empty space.
